Company promises yearly bonus to all employees, only to delay the payment without explanation, forcing employees to cancel plans made for the money: 'It only exists on a spreadsheet'

  • Company waited until the last minute to delay our bonus

We were told all year that our end of year bonus was coming. It was framed as something we earned something we could plan around after a long, exhausting year of hitting targets and picking up extra work.
  • Employee Receiving Envelope from Boss in Office
  • Then right before the end of the year they sent out a vague message saying the bonus is being "delayed." No date.
  • No guarantee. Just corporate language and a thank you for our patience. The part that really messes with me is that people do plan around this stuff.
  • I had already lined up a few things for my wife for New Years. Nothing reckless but definitely not the cheapest purchases either.
  • A couple gifts like a Bartesian, spa date, a small weekend plan because I thought for once this was covered.
  • Now I'm sitting here wondering what the responsible move is. Do I just cancel everything? Do I put it on a card and hope the bonus actually shows up later?
  • Or do I accept that I planned my life around money that apparently only exists on a spreadsheet until they feel like releasing it?
  • That's what bothers me the most. It's not about luxury or entitlement. It's about being told something is coming trusting that word and then being left to clean up the fallout when it suddenly isn't.
  • Deadlines, output and expectations are never "delayed." But pay always seems flexible when it's convenient for them.
  • How are people supposed to plan anything when compensation is treated like a maybe?
  • Boss Giving Money to Employee in Office
  • Chair_luger Don't spend the money expecting to get the bonus later. A very possible scenario is that after the holidays are over there will be layoffs and no bonus. You could not only not get the bonus but you could be out of a job too. I have worked at companies where there was joke going around, "Your bonus this year is not getting la d off.".
  • OP Unfair_Visual4409 The frustration is being told it's earned and coming, then watching the goalposts move when it's convenient. That's not entitlement, it's basic trust and follow through IMO
  • Palliative O It's not coming. Start looking for a job now. Delays in payroll and suddenly unavailable things that were promised (eg bonus, trip to conference, training) are huge red flags that it's going under or layoffs at a minimum.
  • OP Unfair_Visual4409 That's the logical read, and it's probably true. The issue isn't even that though, it's the lack of transparency
  • SteelBird223 This is why you shouldn't spend money that isn't in your bank account yet.
  • Winter_Farm_4739 Cancel everything but the weekend away. Experiences are important and you two may need time away to regroup. And then it also doesn't feel like total deprivation. You are almost certainly not getting the bonus and may either lose your job or end up with a lot of extra work if you are one of the folks who are left. Hang in there
  • MuchDevelopment7084 First of all. Never spend or count on, a bonus that hasn't been paid out. Ever. Now for the translation. Delayed We've canceled it already. But want to avoid the mass departures until we finish out the year so our final quarter looks good. =
  • FillUpMyPassport Our company did a similar thing with merit raises last year. Claimed more time was needed to ensure things were equitable. BS-they just wanted to defer increased salary for another 10 weeks to boost their numbers.
  • Hungry-Quote-1388 The part that really messes with me is that people do plan around this stuff. People shouldn't plan around a non-guaranteed bonus.
  • Quirky-Promotion-114 You don't spend money until the check clears
